Chapter Six

Will waited for the crowd to disperse before he stood to leave. He had given Sheriff Moss the descriptions of Pedro Rodriguez and Lyonel Sims and told him the name of the saloon where they had played cards. Now he was forced to wait.

For two more weeks.

And his family should arrive shortly thereafter. He was still stunned that Claymore had put the outcome on hold. His evidence was more than enough to render a ruling. But Will had seen the tender look that had crossed the judge’s face when he looked at April. Was there a possibility Claymore would side with her just because he felt sorry for her?

Having been around now for a few days, he’d begun to hear the stories circulating about the eldest Wilde sister. He knew she wasn’t well liked. April herself had hinted to the fact that she didn’t need any more trouble. Will knew now it had something to do with April refusing Sadie Claymore’s benevolence years before. Why such a silly thing was still shadowing her was beyond him. But based on the animosity toward her, he’d concluded Judge Claymore would quickly rule in his favor. He’d apparently been wrong. And it was now obvious the judge didn’t feel quite the same as his wife and the rest of the folks in Ruley.

Now Will was faced with another two weeks of uncertainty.

He hoped, during that time, the sheriff would find Rodriguez and Simms. And afterwards, the judge would have no choice but to rule in his favor. In the meanwhile, he’d keep refurbishing the house and renew his resolve to keep his distance from April Wilde. Another two weeks of seeing her every day was going to be hard to take. If he wanted to keep his sanity.

There wasn’t much to the farm except the house and barn. Most of the property was untilled, unfenced open range. There weren’t any cattle and little livestock other than the two horses, milk cow, and noisy chickens. But there was a fenced pasture, an area where the horses were put out to graze and a round paddock.

When the wind picked up two days later and Will was forced to abandon his efforts at finishing the house’s west wall, he headed out to secure pasture fence posts instead. Fall weather in Colorado was as fickle as any female; snowy one day, bright and warm the next. He pretty much didn’t mind anything God’s nature could muster up except the bone-numbing wind. And he’d have liked to call it a day, head back to the barn and relative warmth. But he couldn’t—wouldn’t—until April returned from the river.

She’d passed him on her way to the water awhile ago, a burlap sack in hand. They hadn’t said a word to each other since Judge Claymore had postponed the hearing. But they were battling nonetheless. He’d catch her watching him sometimes with those green eyes of hers glistening with anger, and something else he wished he could define but hadn’t quite been able to put his finger on.
